Another music industry list from Tresbear Music

acoustic guitarHere’s a small and hopefully useful resource for musical instrument dealers in and around Nashville as well as online. We are focusing only upon those musical instrument dealers with whom we’ve had positive personal contact and can recommend based on our experiences. A follow-up article will list studio equipment dealers.

This is not an exhaustive list; it is ordered alphabetically. (Certainly, no slight is intended toward the many excellent dealers that are not on this list!)

Local (Nashville) musical instrument dealers

This small boutique shop in Franklin has an excellent selection of instruments and also hosts small concerts.
The Factory at Franklin, 230 Franklin Road, Suite 11-GG, Franklin TN 37064

Cotten Music
Kim Sherman & staff offer a wonderful boutique buying experience and have a great selection of new & used stringed instruments. The newer, larger locations can even accommodate small concerts. You get a very personal touch from this dealer.

George Gruhn is a world-famous authority on vintage stringed instruments; he’s known especially for his knowledge of Martin Guitars. George’s knowledge is featured on a number of YouTube videos, including the one entitled George Gruhn Guitars which captures a conversation with guitar expert George Gruhn on some highly sought-after instruments and exactly what makes them so valuable.
2120 8th Avenue South, Nashville TN 37204

The Violin Shop
Fred Carpenter has an awesome violin store that has recently moved to a larger location in Nashville. Fred is an outstanding violinist/fiddler and runs a great store. He also hosts small concerts at his shop.

Online musical instrument dealers

Many of these dealers also have brick & mortar stores; for more information, see the respective website.

The Acoustic Music Company (TAMCO)
This fine UK dealer was started and is run by the very knowledgeable Trevor Moyle. Trevor is a very up-front guy. He frequently contributes his knowledge on the Mandolin Cafe online forum.

Dream Guitars
If you want to dream about some of the finest guitars out there and even hear clips of them being played, this is your place!

Elderly Music
Stan Werbin is one of the most ethical merchants I have ever done business with. His website has an outstanding selection of new and vintage instruments.

First Quality Music
I first dealt with the Sullivans when they were selling out of their garage. They have since moved to a huge retail location with an excellent selection of instruments, parts, and strings. They have always made things right.

Harry & Jeannie West Fine Musical Instruments
This is a smaller but very well-respected dealer with a great reputation for early Gibson mandolins.

I first met Janet at the Tennessee Banjo Institute many years ago. She’s a great instructor & now an excellent merchant with a great line of Gibson products & more.

Mandolin Store
This website allows you to hear clips of most of the instruments and also has some instructive videos available; excellent set up provided.

The Music Emporium
This shop has a broad array of musical instruments and a knowledgeable staff; they also carry some really rare, top-of-the-line guitars.

This list was ordered alphabetically. They are all good resources for musical instruments and provide differing strengths to the buyer.
